The 92nd Infantry "Buffalo Soldiers"

The topic I am choosing to write about will be on the 92nd Infantry Division "Buffalo Soldiers". They were an all African American unit in the United States Army that fought in World War 1 and 2. Their division was created in 1917 in Kansas and included African American soldiers from all states. The "Buffalo Soldier" moniker was coined by Great Plain Native Americans in the 19th century. The Native Americans believed their skin color and relentless, unyielding attitudes in fighting resembled the very Buffaloes that roamed the plains during that time. The name was popularized throughout the century and was inherited by the division.
The Buffalo soldiers are important in United States history because they fought in wars that are very significant to our country and our world. World War 1 was a war that involved many of the worlds countries; if the United States had not won that war then our society would be very different today. The second war was World War 2 which involved Hitler and his attempt to eliminate every non-Aryan through world domination. If Hitler had been successful in his attempt, a lot of diversity among people today would not even exist.
The 92nd Infantry Division fighting in these important wars displayed their dedication and courage to America and with all of the holidays and recognitions we give soldiers, it would only be right that the Buffalo Soldiers be put in history books too because they made the same sacrifices as every other soldier in America did.

  1. Wow. A very different topic choice. I personally have not been taught much about the Buffalo Soldiers and that would be a great thing to teach modern day history classes. It could be integrated into social issues because from a long period of time African Americans had been fighting for their country yet in the 50s and 60s their rights were incredibly stunted. Great idea.

  2. This is a great topic to choose to write about. I have never personally heard about this infantry division or have I ever been taught about them. The fact that they were so significant in American history proves that they should be taught more broadly across the country.

  3. I have never heard about this topic as well. Since very few people know about the 92nd Infantry, this makes it a perfect topic to re-evaluate. The "Buffalo Soldiers" were clearly an influential part of the United States history and helped make the US what it is today by risking their lives in WWI and WWII.
